After Mike passed away a thread was started on the Britishrally website, here is a copy of the messages left by his friends and colleagues.

Shocked to hear last night that Mike Panes, better known as Scottie, has passed away. He will be sadly missed by all.

I've just heard that news too! I pass would mine and Stuart and Steve Clarke and all the guys at CC Groundworks condolences to the his family at this sad time. I last spoke to Mike at the Bill Gwynne stages last August. He was a very friendly chap and will be missed.

I heard the news last night, Mike was a great friend of mine and he will be a big loss. My condolences to Elizabeth and his family.

Mike will by missed by a great many of people in the sport.

I'd known Mike for a long time, as not only did we work together in rallying through Paul Alexander and latterly at ProSpeed, but we also worked together on a project with Welsh Water in 2001. It was a complete disaster as the equipment never worked properly, but we both saw the funny side of things! We had to!

As a result, I'm feeling pretty numb today, as many others are. Its a terrible shock to the system, and my sincere condolences go out to all Mike's family and friends today.

Jamie Edwards.

As many of you may have already heard, Mike Panes passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon following a brief illness.

My own words simply can't convey the sadness of this shocking news, which I know will be felt by the enormous number of people who knew Mike.

During the nine years since we met, Mike proved to be not only an accomplished co-driver, but also a very dear friend. I feel privileged to be on the list of drivers with whom Mike competed, which also includes Bill Gwynne, John Price, Bob Fowden, Phil Morgan, John Morgan, Simon Mauger, Leon Pesticcio, Chris Moore and David Wright to name but a few.

Mike's enthusiasm and professionalism throughout his 25-plus years in rallying has rubbed off on everyone who met him, and our sport is without doubt a poorer place without "Scotty".

Our thoughts are with Elizabeth, James and all his family and friends at this time.

Paul Alexander

Not a great deal that can added that hasn't been said already. Mike will be missed by so many people in and out of the sport

Big, BIG sadness in the CC Groundworks camp.

Mike was a top Bloke and we all offer massive condolences to all his family.

Wherever you are Mikey, keep it FLAT OVER CREST.

Cliffy Simmons, Stuart & Steve Clarke and all the BOYS!!!!!!!!

Having known Mike the last couple of years it is barely believable that he has now gone.

A top bloke who was very professional at everything he did and also enjoyed a laugh and a joke. My kids, Jules and I will certainly miss him as he was very good to all of us.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Tony Dean and Family

I am absolutely shell-shocked. Scottie was great character in very many senses who has contributed greatly to the enjoyment of many - whether it be the many drivers he has sat with and helped, fellow competitors such as myself who always enjoyed a joke with him on events, marshals who appreciated his jovial nature or spectators. We shall all miss him.
Ryland James

I met Mike for the first time 4 years ago and since then we became very good friends. I also had the pleasure of working with him during his time with Chris Moore and Paul Alex. He was a larger than life character who was fun to be around. If he did not greet me with some sort of insult and a laugh after it I knew there was something wrong. A true pearl on a sandy shore.

Not quite sure how to feel, it has still not sunk in

Scottie, you will be sadly and deeply missed. The world will not be the same without you but I know you will be looking down making sure everything and everyone is going OK.

We hold you close within our hearts
And there you shall remain
To walk with us throughout our lives
Until we meet again
So rest in peace dear friend
And thanks for all you've done
We pray that God has given you
The crown you've truly won

My deepest condolences to Elizabeth, James and all his family and friends
Ciara Conlan

Shocked and saddened at the news, have only known Mike since I became involved with ANCRO last year. A truly nice guy who gave me some sound advice which was right and greatly appreciated.

Will be missed

Val Thompson

I'm still in total shock and disbelief after my phone call last night from Paul Alex. I must have known Mike and competed against him for 20 years. A great character and good fun to be around.

He was so very kind and supportive to me when I was poorly 4 years ago.

This weekend is going to be difficult for us all on the Border Counties as he will be missed so much.

I cannot imagine an ANCRO round without him being there in some capacity.

Deepest Condolences to his family and friends.

Dilys T.

Another very sad day in the motorsport world.

Sincere condolances to all Mike's friends and family at this devastating time.

From all at ProSpeed Motorsport

It was a shock to find out the sad news last night, Mike was a gentleman and a scholar and I will truly miss our banter.

Craig Thorley

A tragic loss to the rallying world. Mike has been a good friend and competitor. We eventually had the opportunity to compete together briefly in 2003 and we had an absolute blast. Such a competent professional in the car and a total nutter out of it. I am sorry we never got the opportunity to repeat the experience.

I will have a lump in the throat all day.

A Sad loss to all he will be remembered I'm sure.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Paul Hudson

Mike was one of the friendliest competitors around who effortlessly combined professionalism as a co-driver with being able to have a laugh with everybody outside the car. Everybody knew him; he will be missed by all.

Andrew Bargery

Such a sad loss. Im just waiting for the shock to dissapear and the reality to set in

Mike guided me to some of my best results ever, during the 2003 season. We had many high's, and many lows, but in the end he would always keep my chin up and remain focused and positive throughout.

I remember getting a pencil in the leg whilst changing up into 6th in the fog on the Pirelli, with the words "Don't you f*****g dare!" and those faitfull words on the Scottish "Chris, I think its time to pull over... I cant read my notes for the smoke... and the cars on fire!"

He was one of the few people I know who managed to find the right balance between his passion and dedication to the sport, shared with a hard working and dedicated family life.

I only spoke to him 2 weeks ago. Isn't it awful when you don't get the chance to say goodbye

Chris Moore

Gutted to hear the news.

Mike was someone I always spoke to at rallies, all ways had a word for me and helped me out in the past. Even had a word for me when they retired at the Sunseeker.

He was kind enough to put me up one year at the Rally GB when I was out and about with Ciara.

Will be missed and this weekend won't be the same.

Richard Edwards

Mike will be missed by everyone that knew him and I too was shocked to hear this news.

I lost a good friend last Friday evening and I'm still totally gutted. I cant make it to the funeral tomorrow but i will be having a few drinks for him at the Border Counties, it was pointed out to me that he would rather i was happy and doing something i enjoyed than being sad and i think Mike would've thought the same for everyone he knew.

So lets have a good weekend and remember those that aren't with us anymore but remember they wouldn't want us to be down even though its very hard not to be.

Mandy Twynham

I had the pleasure to meet Mike on a few occasions at different rallies last year and share a chat. I found him to be friendly very sound down to earth bloke, and he seemed to be a switched on co driver also, an all round nice guy. He will be missed.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends

"Go Neiri an bothar leis"

May he rest in peace.

Martin Brady

Just like to add my condolences to the list known Mike over the last 10 or probably 15 years and he will be sorely missed by all.

Guy Woodcock

A great loss to everyone who was fortunate to have met him, excellent character and always had time to talk to anyone he saw. Only knew him for 3 years but was a great help to me on several occasions. Will be sadly missed.

I've only just heard....devastatingly sad news.

I've known Mike for many, many years - always smiling, always laughing & having joke.

A great loss to all his friends and his fellow club members at Amman & District MC

Take care mate and just keep calling those notes wherever you are.

He was a larger than life character who was fun to be around. If he did not greet me with some sort of insult and a laugh after it I knew there was something wrong --- Totally agree with you there....... First met Mike in Belgium about 5 years ago. Have not seen him since the Flatters last year where it was insults all day...

God Bless Mike - Linda Whitmore

First met Mike on Manx National many years ago when he got the rough edge of my tongue and we became friends immediately and remained good friends. Yes he has graced the settee but never bore a grudge. The sport has lost an excellent co-driver a true competitor who always had time for you and one of its characters but above all we have lost a friend. It is sad and hard to realise that we will never see the cheeky smile again.

God bless you Mike

A great loss and he will be sadly missed, this weekend won't be the same, and it will be hard to come to terms with. Professional and fun to be with and always down to earth, Mike will be sadly missed by us all.

SRM Racing

A true gent?! (Aye, he was really!).... a great laugh.... always smiling.... he got life right! Such a shame that a great guy be taken from us so soon.

A great friend. We'll all miss you Mike.

John B

Spent all day thinking about Mike.

A Co-drivers, co-driver.

Rest in peace.
Bryan Hull.

I first Met Mike when he was co-Driving for Simon Mauger in the Puma- always such a nice bloke. Met him on many occasion since and he always had time for a quick hello.

I am totally shocked by this terrible loss.

Rest in Peace.

A very sad day.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Mike (Scotty) for many years now and no matter how good or bad his rally was going you would always hear him laughing.

Mike, fellow competitor, friend, keep calling the notes wherever you are you are going to be sorely missed.

Condolences to all family and friends.

Paul Morris

I knew Mike mainly from organising the Flatters and it was the '01 event which I will always remember. It was the foot and mouth year and I was on the first stage at the end of the Burma Road when Gareth Griffiths and Mike arrived backwards at high speed despite the fact that the road is fairly straight!! The car stopped and stalled and all you could hear was laughter coming from the cockpit!!! A real shame to have lost someone who was always happy and ready to speak.

Absolutely gob-smacked!

First time to here or read his name without bringing a smile to my face!

Deepest condolences to all his family

Rest in peace Scotty.

Have just heard the very sad news.

Another great loss to the sport, everyone that knew him will miss his humour and his dedication to motorsport.

Condolences to his family and friends

Scotty - you'll be missed by us all.

John Price Rallying.

Having met Mike as firstly a co-driver, then as one of "my boys" he was truly a professional in the sport and a friend. Would always be objective if we bounced an idea through him before it was used in the Cup, and who else but Mike would be first to point out a gaffe on my part. But he did it with a smile and it was always accepted knowing it had come from impeccable preparation on his own part.

But his ready willingness to help out whenever something was needed makes him stand out more. He put himself out for others, which makes him quite remarkable.

I will miss him, the sport will miss him. My thoughts are with Elizabeth and his family. God speed Mike.

Stella Boyles.

A total shock, a terribly sad time for his family, friends and rallying.

Paul Hughes and all at Whickham District Motor Club

No words can express such a loss

God bless you Scotty

I met Mike in about 1999, and competed against him and of course socialised with him…! He was a great bloke in many ways, a well-organised co-driver who was passionate but still enjoyed what he was doing.

Will be missed by all…..and my condolences to his Elizabeth and all the family

Gordy

I first met Mike on the Network Q in 98. He was in the last car on the road number 176, he was sitting with Sabrina Shaw who had only passed her test a few weeks before. I was in the next car, the last but one car, fulfilling my lifes ambition at the time competing on the RAC Rally. That whole experience was fantastic and Mike became a great friend then.

I think I have seen him a nearly every rally I have done since, as he has done the Peugeot Cup every year I have, together with all the before and after rally pi$$ ups we've had.

It took all that time for us to actually get to sitting in a rally car together where we competed on the Wyedean last month, where he gained my further admiration and respect because he was an absolute professional in the car. Together with the normal micky taking and general barracking that I have done with him for all that time he was a top bloke.

To hear this news is unbelievably sad, but I will remember Mike with a smile as I think of the fun we have had over the years.

Keep her lit Mike
Richard Sykes

Gob smacked............can't believe this when I switched the computer on.

A sad day for all who knew him........very sad

Mike was a true character and a great sportsman, and we will all miss him. Always professional, always with a smile, and a great sense of fun. I only saw him briefly at the Sunseeker but my last real memories will be of Richard (Sykes) and Mike on the Wyedean sharing the car together and despite their problems on the day you could spot the car a mile away - from the grins.

Our thoughts are with Mike's family at this time and their loss.

Dave McKinlay

Mike was a top bloke who took the time to teach me a lot about co-driving and had the generosity of spirit to help out even when we were direct rivals. He was one of the friendly, smiling, piss taking characters that truly defines the sport of rallying and sets it apart from other forms of competition. His loss is rallying's loss.

For me his spirit will live on in the UK Forests, in French and Irish lanes, and especially on Epynt, a co-drivers heaven if ever there was one.

Mark Andrews

On behalf of Forresters Car Club and South Wales Automobile Club (S.W.A.C) what a great loss to the sport and all who knew him. A really nice guy and a shame some things get taken away, all too untimely.

Our thoughts go out to Mike's family.

On behalf of all members of SWAC, I would like to add our deepest condolences to Elizabeth and Mike's family.

When Jimmy Jones told me the news yesterday, it left me gutted.

It has taken quite some time to read all the tributes to Mike (I must have something in my eye), but it has been worthwhile. Whilst he was diminutive in stature, he was a giant of a gentleman, with a wicked sense of humour and an unsurpassed ability to include a vast number of swearwords into the shortest of sentences, without causing offence to even the primmest of people.

The last time I saw Mike was at the start of stage 5 on the Wyedean, and he was exactly as I want to remember him - no sign of illness, grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat and hurling a barrage of abuse at me (and taking an equal quantity back). I have the distinct feeling that he will still find a way to let me know if I cock things up - nothing has ever stopped him before.

Rallying was richer as a result of his participation and we will all miss him greatly, but will benefit from having known him.

Thanks for the memories Mike. We will not forget you.

Absolutely shocked….

I am so very saddened by this news, I last spoke to Mike on the Wyedean, he was always happy and greeted everybody with a smiling face. He will be sadly missed.

On behalf of the Forest of Dean Motor Club and the Wyedean Forest Rally our thoughts and sympathy go to his family and many fiends in this sport we love.

When I received the news by Text message I thought it was a joke, and was waiting for the punch line - unbelievable! Just can't take it in. I've just been reflecting on how long I've known Scotty and we go back to his days with John Morgan in the Nova back in the early 90's.

No doubt he'll be "organising" things upstairs - God help them!!

Gary Pesticcio

Heard the news from Ciara yesterday, and still I cannot believe it, I only spoke to him a few weeks ago.

Deepest sympathy to all his family.

Dave Higgs

I think it's fair to say all of us are still in shock. Have known Scotty so long I can't remember when I did first meet him. As everyone has said he was a good friend. I'm certainly going to miss those insults.

I hope wherever you are there's rallying.

Rest in peace Scotty xx.

My deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and all his family and friends

On behalf of all members of Pembrokeshire Motor Club

I would like to add our deepest condolences to Elizabeth and Mike's family.

Mike always had a smile and that's the way to remember him.

If we all follow in his footsteps we will not go far wrong.

Would like to add my sincerest sympathy's to Mike's family.

Only met him once and that was at the Autosport show a few years back and the craic and banter that was had in the hotel bar that night and into the early hours of the following morning and then again after the BRC awards the following night in the Hilton was unforgettable.

Rest in Peace

Deepest sympathy to all his family.

A sad loss indeed

Carl Williamson

The 1st time I met Scotty was on the 1983 Peter Russek Rally going to marshal with Amman & District MC his Mini conked out again on the way to the stage. A few years later he started to co-drive for John. They enjoyed success in the little Blue Nova with Scotty the optimist, keeping john in line--no mean feat. He always competed in a professional manner that reflected in their achievements against better and more powerful machinery. A good friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

Keep a good spot for me Scotty.
Kathy Morgan

If there was ever a question you needed answered, or a job done, you only had to ask and help was at hand. Whether it was motor sport or personal, advice was given freely and without prejudice.

One of the best.
Amman and District Motor Club

Well I do not have the words to express my feelings at this time. I Knew Mike Panes or as his friends new him Scotty for over 25 years and after "Blue" went to the scrap yard in the sky we lost touch a little only seeing each other on events when he was competing and I was marshalling, but I still continued to admire his rallying career with pride after those simple days we had together in a 1300 Nova.

Keep "Blue revving old friend until we meet again.

My deepest sympathy to Elizabeth and all his family.

John G. Morgan

Shocked is an understatement, my thoughts are with Mikes family at this sorry time. Only had the pleasure of meeting Mike on a few occasions but he was always full of fun and always had the last laugh.

Rest in peace Scotty, you will be sadly missed.

Shocked and stunned at the news.

One of the best. He always had time for anyone and anything. A great example to us all.

He will be greatly missed
Andy Bull

We are both saddened by the news of Scotty.

We look back remembering being part of the service crew for our father & Scotty, memories that will be with us forever.

Our thoughts are with you.

Hannah & Bethan Morgan

This is very sad news indeed. Mike will be much missed.

Kate and Paul Heath

On behalf of Heads of The Valleys Motor Club, please accept our condolences. There were many members who knew Mike well, and many who didn`t know him so well from our club. However, the posts here say it all.

A generouun loving guy obviously, somebody who knew the sport well and had the hunour to match. Characters like Mike are the`Main Men` in the sport and I`m sure, that I speak on behalf of all our members and many others who knew him, that Rallying will be a sadder place without the likes of Mike.

Heads of The Valleys Auto Club.

I just thought I would put a post on behalf of everyone in David Wrights rally team I hope they don't mind. Mike sat with David from a number of years including last year on the ANCRO championship. Mike was a great character, he loved co-driving and rallying and this shows with the sheer amount of friends he made. He will be very much missed both from the team and throughout rallying and we felt it only right by way of respect to Mike to pull out of the Border Counties rally at the weekend. Personally I just can't believe whats happened only a weeks ago we all saw him at the Sunseeker rally, we always liked to wind each other up mainly about my tea making skills All the team are deeply saddened and our thoughts go to his family at this hard time.

Shelley Rogerson

I'm rarely in the British Rallying section of these forums now, and have only just stumbled across this news now. To say I'm shocked would be an understatment. I first met Mike when he co-drove for Chris Moore in the Peugeot, and although I didn't know him as well as most who have left their messages here, he would never pass without stopping for a chat. My deepest sympathies to his family and close friends.

Courtney Motorsport Images

Think I met Mike just the once at the Autosport Show a couple of years back and only just stumbled across this tragic news now.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Dreadful news about Mike, whom I've known since we were both 17, but I can't think about Scotty without smiling (and laughing out loud) about the following experience:

In the early 80's I serviced for Mike in the first rally he ever did in a fast but fragile Mini that he'd bought locally. We drove in convoy from Ammanford to Condover airfield in Shrewsbury, Mike and co-driver in the Mini, and me following, 4 up with spares in my Escort Estate. Half way through the event the Mini's gearbox broke, and without a trailer, we had to tow it home (a good 80 miles) on rope.

We got to Brecon by about 8 in the evening, and had to stop at a red light in the town. A man, probably a bit drunk, walked out of a nearby Chinese takeway with a big carrier bag of food in each hand. He looked both ways, crossed the road between my car and Scotty's Mini, and tripped over the unexpected towrope. The bags and he went flying and £40s worth of Chinese splatted all over the road. Meanwhile the lights changed, and the Escort /Mini convoy innocently pulled way. In the mirror you could see the totally baffled drunk trying to work out what had tripped him up and ruined his dinner. Scotty, having had a front row seat for the performance was incoherent with laughter, as were we all. At a discrete distance, we pulled up, unable to drive for laughing.

Happy days Scotty.................Jonathan

Also so shocked to hear the news, Condolences to all.

Jakes Kelly

I met Mike while he was co-driving for Mr Moore in the 206 championship. As everyone has said he was a larger than life character but one incident stands out for me and always makes me laugh.

I cant remember which rally, and I cant remember the exact circumstances but for what ever reason they arrived at service with a car that wouldn't move under its own power (don't ask how they got it there!).

With about 200 yards left to go to the in control they were both out of the car, pushing. Chris, not wanting to be excluded was shouting at the onlookers "Dont touch the car, DONT touch the car!!", Mike however was shouting "Jon, you cant push the car but you can push me!!"

So there we were, Chris pushing and steering, Mike pushing the car at the back, and me with my hands on his shoulders, pushing him.

Needless to say he had a HUGE smile on his face.

"It's all flat" Mike.
Jon Tucker

I am stunned - Myself and Liz met Mike a couple of years ago, at a Peugeot function. Mike was howling with laughter at something Liz did, we all joined in!! He was always a character that you could just pick up with and enjoy his company, Liz loved the kilt at the functions and would wait for him to have full hands with a drinks tray.

Condolences to all his family and Paul Alexander and team.

Pat & Liz Flynn.

I have known Mike for several years and spoke at some length to him at the motorsport show this year about his exciting plans for this year....he always had time for a chat and will be remembered for his humour and enthusiasm......all condolences to his family.. Ian
